Description

Historical organ pipes were usually made from Sn alloys. They may be alloyed by Pb, Cu, Fe and some other elements. The Sn rich alloys have almost similar composition as modern soldering materials. Based on this reason, the historical organ pipes materials can serve as source of information about microstructural evolution by long term natural ageing.
This work is dedicated to study of the real microstructure on propensity to degradation by so called tin pest. It is modification from white tin to grey tin at temperatures under approximately 10 °C. The influence of individual alloying elements has not been reliably described, yet. Not only on the concentration of the alloying element but also on the distribution may play the important role.
The presence of Cu6Sn5 or FeSn2 intermetallic particles was detected in the historical materials. The Pb was detected on the surface but not in the bulk of the material.
