Description
Four blast furnace steel makers and one engineering company in Japan have been
prosecuted in the “CO2 Ultimate Reduction in Steelmaking Process by Innovative Technology
for Cool Earth 50 (COURSE50) Project”, since FY2008 as a National Projects commissioned
by New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO).
The target of COURSE50 is a reduction of approximately 30% in CO2 emissions in the steel
manufacturing process. Two technologies are investigated, a) Reduction of iron ore by using
hydrogen and hydrocarbon-containing coke oven gas to suppress CO2 emissions from blast
furnaces, and b) separation and recovery of CO2 from blast furnace gas with chemical
absorption method and physical adsorption method by exploitation of unused waste heat in
the steel works The operation trials at LKAB's experimental blast furnace in Luleå in
cooperation with LKAB and Swerea MEFOS were carried out. In the case of operation trials
injected COG and reformed COG (RCOG), the increase in H2 reduction instead of C direct
reduction that is a huge endothermic reaction, makes the input of C decreased comparing the
reference period. Based on these results, we have developed further scheme of decreasing the
C direct reduction in the blast furnace using blast control method.
