Description
Hydroxyapatite (HAP) has been used more and more as a catalytic media for the conversion of ethanol1, such as converting ethanol to n-butanol, converting ethanol to butadiene, using apatites doped with Sb and Mn5. In this context, the present work aims to develop catalysts, using the HAP obtained by sol - gel method, using eggshell as a source, to be used in the conversion of ethanol into n-butanol6.
In this work, nanometric hydroxyapatite powders are synthesized from the chicken's eggshells. The calcium carbonate, from eggshells, is converted into CaO, which will be hydrolyzed in order to form Ca(OH)2 and then reacted with phosphoric acid. This reaction occurs at ambient temperature, under constant stirring of an aqueous solution. The HAPs are calcined at temperatures of 600ºC and 800 ºC, for 2 hours. The characterization of these powders was performed using X-ray diffraction (XDR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electronic microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectronic spectroscopy (XPS). After conducting those characterization tests, the powders are tested in catalytic reactions, through two types of reactors, conventional and microwave.
It is expected that the results obtained will be equal to or exceed those observed in the bibliographic references of this work, like the consolidation of the route of synthesis of HAP by the sol-gel method; high surface area with the obtaining that present pure hydroxyapatite and that present a high efficiency as a catalyst.
