Description
The expanding transport and traffic sector and the associated negative impact on the environment pose ever greater challenges for the automotive industry. Materials need to become lighter and more sustainable without sacrificing performance. In order to meet the growing demands for lightweight materials that offer not only high strength but also sufficient forming performance, a big step forward was gained by the introduction of crossover alloy concepts.
This new class of alloys are promising to combine the excellent formability of 5xxx-series alloys with the outstanding strength of 7xxx-series alloys, therefore overcoming this long-standing trade-off. Concerning sustainability, the question of recyclability is of enormous interest and needs to be thoroughly addressed. Therefore, in this study the effect of alloying element variations on the mechanical properties is investigated. Special focus is set on the potential interference of impurities with the development of hardening phase during heat treatment.
