Description
Aluminum alloys with addition of Fe and Si are commonly used as packaging foil stock materials. Homogenization is an important initial technological step, which significantly affects behavior of the alloys during further processing and also the quality of the finished product. The main point of homogenization is to suppress non-uniformity of solutes distributions formed during casting due to applied cooling gradients, or to modify the dispersion and size of primary intermetallic particles, which form during solidification of the alloy as a result of a limited solubility of different alloying elements. Alloys with different concentrations of solutes and Fe/Si ratios were selected for the study of microstructural changes during high temperature annealing combining in-situ and post-mortem microscopic observations and measurements of bulk material properties at different stages of the annealing. Attempts to identify the role of particular elements in microstructural development of those alloys during different stages of homogenization were performed.
