Description
3D-EBSD characterization of microstructures provides the opportunity to construct, visualize and analyze representative volume element (RVE) that are required for full-field finite element simulations. However, considering the fact that 3D-EBSD characterization is very time-consuming it is of crucial importance to investigate whether or not specific features of the 3D RVE cannot be derived from conventional 2D characterization. To address this issue, a statistical comparison between microstructural variables obtained from 2D- and 3D-EBSD data sets was done in this work. Wide-field 3D-EBSD measurements were carried out for 2 types of dual-phase steels processed under different conditions. The statistics on phase fraction and texture derived from 2D data were found as reliable as those obtained from 3D data, except for geometrical features that typically require 3D visualization such as grain morphology and the number of neighbors.
