Description

Two types of novel aqua-based complex slurries having compositions of (5%SiO2 - 10%ZrSiO4 - 10%Y2O3 - 10%ZrO2) and (10%ZrSiO4 - 15%Y2O3 - 10%ZrO2) have been introduced into the casting of IN-718 superalloy in ZrSiO4 molds. The effect of ceramic slurries on the course of interfacial phenomena between IN-718/ZrSiO4 was firstly evaluated in high-temperature wettability experiments by the sessile drop method. After that, some exemplary components have been fabricated in semi-industrial conditions. Both sessile drop couples, as well as produced castings were subjected to non-destructive and destructive inspections by means of computed tomography or metallographic analyses. The effect of ceramic slurries on the surface and metallurgical quality on IN-718 castings, was discussed.
