Description
The study of wetting and interfacial phenomena occurring when a liquid metal comes into contact with a ceramic surface is of interest for several technological application such as joining by brazing, casting, infiltration to produce composites, deposition of coatings, etc.
In this work, the wetting behavior of TiAlX (X = Cu, Ni, Fe) alloys on alumina is studied by the sessile drop method at 1500 °C. The interfacial characteristics are investigated and the relation between the contact angle and the interfacial reaction is established.
The equiatomic TiAl intermetallic exhibited a wetting behaviour with a contact angle of 60°, neither interfacial reaction nor macroscopic dissolution of the ceramic substrate were observed. On the other hand, addition of a third element improved the wetting and led to a slight dissolution of the alumina substrate.
