Description

X-ray micro tomography allows non-destructive imaging of the internal microstructure of materials, with a spatial resolution that can approach that of optical microscopy. This technique is gaining more and more importance for applications where the three-dimensional (3D) nature of the phenomenon is important, or when the evolution of critical characteristics is of interest, whether in the process of manufacture or under service conditions. In the field of composites, heterogeneity and architecture are important attributes. They often require a 3D assessment to understand the formation and evolution of defects which is essential for the structural integrity of the composite.

Mitigating the environmental impact is a growing concern in the industry. In aeronautics, research is focused in particular on the design of new materials. To understand the implementation potential of new green materials in aircraft parts, we need to understand their mechanical properties. A more precise description of the microstructure was needed to better understand these materials and accelerate their development. X-ray tomography in combination with segmentation tools and image processing can be used to accurately characterize the microstructure, impregnation quality and fiber/porosity content. The Representative Volume Element (RVE) extracted from this approach is then used for mechanical simulation. The aim of this study is to evaluate the usefulness of reconstructed computed tomography images of bamboo material and bamboo based composite.
