Description
Graphene is considered to be largely impermeable to gases, ionic species and
liquids making it in principle a promising and ultimately thin corrosion barrier.
We aim to grow high quality graphene coatings, on di?erent modern steels by
catalytic chemical vapor deposition (CVD). This remains an unresolved chal-
lenge, mainly due to the large parameter space in balancing CVD temperature
pro?les and precursor feeding against the steels' carbon solubilities and cat-
alytic activities which are highly phase dependent in multi-phased and highly
alloyed modern steels. We therefore adapt established industrial carburization
and nitriding techniques and incorporate the growth of a 2D coating into these
hardening processes to form an e?ective additional 2D corrosion barrier. Re-
maining defects in the 2D layers are passivated through the deposition of non-2D
metal oxides, further improving the coating's capability.
